For people living with Parkinson’s disease, basic movements—standing up, taking a step, turning around, or getting out of a chair—can become daily challenges.
Parkinson’s is often associated with tremor, but bradykinesia, rigidity, freezing of gait, postural instability, and fear of falling can all impact mobility. Over time, these challenges can reduce confidence, decrease activity, and lead to greater dependence.
To understand these movement challenges, it is important to understand the role of dopamine. Dopamine helps the brain initiate, regulate, and grade movement. In Parkinson’s disease, the loss of dopamine-producing neurons contributes to movements becoming slower, smaller, and less automatic. An individual’s perception of movement can also change. A movement that appears small or slow to a therapist may feel completely normal to the person with Parkinson’s. This disconnect helps explain why external cueing and intentional, large-amplitude movements are so important in Parkinson’s rehabilitation.
Emerging research suggests that exercise may support neuroplasticity and influence dopamine-related pathways involved in movement. Exercise may do more than strengthen muscles in individuals with Parkinson’s—it can also provide repeated opportunities to practice movement, challenge motor control, and reinforce functional patterns. Programs such as LSVT BIG and Rock Steady Boxing emphasize these principles through large-amplitude movement, intensity, repetition, coordination, and cognitive-motor challenges.
This is where I see an opportunity for Lite Run.
Lite Run provides body-weight support and fall protection, allowing clinicians to create opportunities for patients to practice standing, stepping, and walking with the level of assistance they need. With up to 150 pounds of body-weight support, clinicians can progressively adjust assistance as a patient’s abilities change.
By reducing weight-bearing demands while maintaining active participation, Lite Run may allow clinicians to incorporate high-repetition, task-specific training for individuals who may otherwise be unable to safely achieve the necessary volume of practice.
The goal isn’t simply to help someone walk more during therapy. It is to help people maintain mobility, function, and independence for as long as possible throughout the course of Parkinson’s disease. Because maintaining the ability to move means maintaining the ability to participate in the life that matters to you.
